SO FAR...

A snow day. And I thought only schoolchildren had them!

My offices all closed.

The wind howls around my little house, and piles drifts inside the kitchen door.

I take the time to type up long-intended posts, and think of those whom I would gladly have at hand, in a nearly cozy house in a howling storm.

Sleep tight, my lonesome lover...

SLEEP TIGHT, MY LONESOME LOVER

It isn't miles but hours keep us apart—
Were it but miles at least we two could talk.
But you're asleep; I wake. You sleep alone.
I cannot rest a hand upon your heart
Nor hold you tight, nor rouse you for a walk.
I wake, you sleep—and you or I may moan.
Your loneliness I know is all the worse
For having shared your bed and felt a touch,
Received a waking kiss, a long embrace.
And I, whose yearning has no home but verse,
Would take your pain to have had half as much
For moments — but I cannot take your place.

You sleep, I wake. My heart cries out to say:
Sleep well, and rise to find a better day.

  1. A snow day?? We rarely have those in the deep south. People here don't know how to drive if there is a 1/4 inch of snow or ice on the roads. Having grown up in the Midwest and lived for four years in the frozen tundra of Alaska, to me it is no problem.

Thanks for the email BTW. Please respond at your convenience.
